Q: What inspired you to become a nurse and serve in the military?
A: I was inspired to become a nurse because I wanted to help people. I had always been interested in healthcare, but it wasn’t until I joined the Army that I decided to pursue nursing as a career. Serving in the military gave me an opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to help others while also serving my country. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and one that has shaped who I am today.

A: Working at Elmhurst Hospital Center during the pandemic was both challenging and rewarding. It was difficult seeing so many patients suffering from COVID-19, but it was also inspiring to see how everyone came together to provide care for those in need. We worked long hours, often with limited resources, but we never stopped fighting for our patients. It was an incredible experience that will stay with me forever.

It was very robotic and I felt like I wasn’t really helping people.”

So she decided to go back to school and become a naturopathic doctor. She graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, in 2011 and opened her own practice in 2012.
Today, Olszewski focuses on helping her patients achieve optimal health through natural therapies such as nutrition, lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and acupuncture. She also offers counseling services to help her patients make positive changes in their lives.
“My goal is to empower my patients to take control of their own health,” Olszewski says. “I want them to understand that they have the power to heal themselves.”
I think that’s what really drove me to become a pharmacist,” she said.
The pharmacy school at the University of Florida was her first choice, and she was accepted in the fall of 2017. She graduated in May 2020 with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
“I’m so proud of myself for being able to do it,” she said. “It was definitely hard work, but it was worth it.”
Now, as a pharmacist at Walgreens, she is able to use her knowledge and experience to help patients make informed decisions about their medications. She also works with doctors and other healthcare providers to ensure that patients are getting the best care possible.
“I’m really passionate about helping people understand their medications and how they can be used safely and effectively,” she said. “I want to make sure that everyone has access to the right medication at the right time.”
I had to figure out how to make money and so I decided to start my own business.
I started by researching the market and seeing what services were in demand. I also looked at what skills I had that could be used to provide those services. After doing some research, I realized that there was a need for virtual health coaching services. So, I decided to create an online platform where people could access health coaching services from me.
I then created a website and social media accounts to promote my business. I also reached out to potential clients through email campaigns and networking events. Finally, I invested in marketing materials such as flyers and brochures to help spread the word about my business.
Overall, it has been a challenging but rewarding experience starting my own business. It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication but it has been worth it in the end!

“It was really hard to see so many people in such a critical state.”

“I think it’s important for people to remember that nurses are not just there to take care of patients,” she says. “We’re also there to provide emotional support for them and their families. It’s a very difficult job, but it’s incredibly rewarding.”
Olszewski is grateful for the opportunity to help during this difficult time and hopes that her experience will inspire others to do the same. “I hope that my story will encourage more people to volunteer in whatever capacity they can,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be in a hospital setting—there are so many ways you can help out your community right now.”
The nurses soon realized that the military was not prepared for their arrival. The hospital they were sent to was understaffed and ill-equipped, with no beds or medical supplies. It could also be due to a lack of understanding of how best to utilize the nurses’ skills and experience. Whatever the reason, it is clear that more needs to be done in order to ensure that all available resources are being used effectively in times of crisis.
It was because the staff that we had was not properly trained.
The biggest challenge I faced at Elmhurst Hospital was trying to manage a chaotic environment with limited resources. So, it’s a great place to experiment and try new things. And that’s why we have so many startups in Silicon Valley. People are willing to take risks and try new things without fear of failure or repercussions.”

Routine Ventilation Was a Death Sentence
At Elmhurst, Olszewski and his colleagues had already seen the same thing. “We were seeing a lot of patients who were coming in with COVID-19 and were being put on ventilators,” he says. “But we weren’t seeing a lot of them coming off.”
The team started to look for alternatives to mechanical ventilation, such as noninvasive ventilation (NIV) or high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC). NIV involves using a mask to deliver oxygen directly to the lungs without intubation, while HFNC delivers oxygen through two small tubes inserted into the nostrils. Both methods are less invasive than mechanical ventilation and can be used for milder cases of COVID-19.
Olszewski and his colleagues found that both NIV and HFNC could be effective in treating milder cases of COVID-19, allowing patients to avoid intubation and its associated risks. I was so embarrassed and ashamed. I felt like I had let them down, and that I had let myself down.
But they were so supportive and understanding. They reminded me that it wasn’t my fault, and that it’s not uncommon for nurses to experience burnout or compassion fatigue in their careers. They helped me realize that it was okay to take a break, and that I needed to take care of myself first before anything else.
Since then, I’ve been taking more time off work, getting enough sleep, eating healthy meals, exercising regularly, and spending quality time with friends and family. It’s made a huge difference in my mental health and wellbeing.”

I was told that if I didn’t like it, I could leave.
